Reading again (finally)
This morning I took a TOEIC test again. It had been 2 years since I last took this test, and it expires after 2 years. Technically I don't need to do it again, but I want to put it on my resume, and they would notice it's been 2 years.
It's an English test separated by Listening and Reading tests, both having 100 questions each. It's a popular test for testing English comprehension in East Asia, particularly Japan and Korea - however, internationally, and especially in Europe and America, it's not very well respected. That is because, well, if you can listen to and read English on a fairly intermediate level, it's a piss-easy test. I can speak at a native level, so I got 960/990 on my score last time.
The TOEFL is a much more respected test internationally, and it's also much, much more difficult and more expensive to apply for. I haven't taken that one yet, but I do plan to one day, if I have the money to. I believe it's about 200 USD in average.
I don't think I'll get 960 this time. I flubbed a few questions because I was very sleepy and I wasn't paying attention during the listening sections. I expect I'll get 920-930 this time. I won't go below 900, which is the agreed upon threshold for "native level speaker" anyway. I don't really need anything higher than that.
If I want to pursue an international education, my TOEFL score will most likely be important, so I need to study for it beforehand. I'll probably do okay though.
Besides that, I finally started reading a book again. I'm actually reading God Bless You Miss Rosewater, which I started reading during the train ride to Pittsburgh, when we went to Anthrocon. But I read from the beginning again, because it's been a long time.
I read for 51:27 and I read the first four chapters. I should be able to finish this one in a week. I will probably read Post-Self by Madison Scott Clary next, because Bea really wants me to read that one, and it's just available online.
