Election day

It was election day today! I couldn't vote because I can't go outside, obviously. I wouldn't anyway, because JWs don't vote. I mean, I could? But if I get found out it could be big trouble for me.

Lee Jaemyoung of the Minju (Democratic) Party is winning. He will basically win by tomorrow morning. I like Lee but he's been a disappointing candidate. He was also the Minju nominee in 2022, but he ran a much more progressive campaign back then, running on a UBI oriented campaign. But in the last year or so, he has abandoned much of his progressive policies, and even has described himself as a "centre-right" candidate.

Good on him for being honest - the Minju party is definitely centre-right on many issues. But it has also typically been the party of democratic activists and labour unionists. Many on the progressive coalition see Lee's heel turn as a betrayal, and I agree.

However, he's a much better alternative than Kim Moonsoo of the People's Power Party, the conservative party. The main focal point of this election has been the act of treason committed by the former president, Yoon Sukyeol of the PPP, when he declared martial law against "North Korean forces within the National Assembly." Kim was a famous democratic activist back in the 80's, a legendary figure in the movement, but he joined the conservative coalition when democracy was established in South Korea, and since then he has become a shell of his former self, allying himself with the evangelical far-right. Kim was one of Yoon's closest allies, and his candidacy basically symbolised a further advancement of Yoon's dictatorial agenda.

Considering that, it's not a surprise that Lee has been seemingly winning in a landslide, the first presidential candidate to win a majority of the vote since Park Geunhye in 2013. Thank fuck someone beat her to that title.

There was also the spoiler conservative candidate, Lee Junseok, infamous for his incel fandom online. Incel men in their 20's went out in droves to vote for him, which is really disgusting but also funny, because that just insured their worst nightmare Lee Jaemyoung's victory. Good job, incels.

Today I didn't do much. I went to get lunch, and then a bunch of my stuff came from Coupang. I was told they'd come on Wednesday but nope, it came today. And I had to walk all the way to the front gate because it was a holiday. It was two tables and the "door rack storage shelf" that I can put on my closet door. So I spent about an hour assembling the shelf and the two tables. Well, one of the tables came prepared, the one I can put on my bed. This one is really helpful because I can finally use my laptop at my normal height instead of facing down at my bed. The other table, I had to assemble it so I could put it next to my bed. Took a while but it was kinda fun.

Then I called Serena for awhile. I always try to call her on my break days because she doesn't have to wait until 2AM to talk to me. It was really fun. I was feeling really lonely today because I hadn't talked to her alot since she was busy, but that made me really happy. I love her so much.

After that I got dinner, took a shower... Or did I take a shower before talking to Serena? I think I did. Damn my memory is getting worse. Anyway, I ate dinner, which kinda sucked, and then I took a little nap. I say "little" but it was for like 3 hours. I woke up at 9PM and everyone was gone because they were either working or had gone to the kingdom hall meeting. So I did some cleaning for like 30 minutes. That was a bit difficult but refreshing. I could get used to it.

Then I went into a Zoom meeting and talked to the "Support Group" for the Seoul Detention Centre JWs. They recommended me a congregation: Gyounggi Gwacheon. It's actually not too far from here. Maybe 30 minutes by bus. It's a small congregation of about 70-80 people, and they've never had Alternative Service JWs come to their congregation before. That means two things: They'll probably give us a lot of work, and they'll probably be really nice to us.

While that first part makes me a bit nervous, there was never gonna be any congregation that doesn't give us ANY work anyway. And the other 3 brothers I came with from Yeongwol will be going with me, so it'd be weird for me to be the odd one out. And if we're all going together I'll feel a bit less lonely and it'll make transportation easier too. I think it's a good idea to just go here.

Hmm. That's all I did today. A quite eventful day, more than I expected. Tomorrow I think I get another health checkup and that should be it. On Thursday they'll show me around the detention centre, and Friday is another holiday. So I'll start work on Monday. Apparently they might have positions for the supplies department, which is one of the ones I wanna go to. Brother Oh is also in it, and also apparently you get to read a lot of weird books. I hope I get to go there.
