Been doing better

I read for 30:15 today. I read Chapter 4 and got a little into Chapter 5. Chapter 5 is actually a pretty long chapter, so I kept reading this time. I'll probably read all of it tomorrow. I love this book, by the way. I'm not talking much about it because I've read it before though.

Had better meals tonight. Got a tonkatsu lunch meal and some fried chickens for dinner.

I bought Fallout 4 because it was on a Steam sale. I'm guessing cause of the TV show. I've never bought it before. I've never bought any of the Bethesda Fallout games. I pirated them before. I also never beat them more than once. I did one playthrough of Fallout 3 years ago and concluded it was the worst game ever made. I actually did play Fallout 4 last year, but this was before I had my new PC, so it kept crashing every 20 minutes. I had 6GB of RAM, because 2 of it was being used by my integrated GPU. I had 32 now, by the way.

Anyway. Apparently you can't mod them unless you buy them on Steam. It doesn't even work if you buy it on the Epic Games store. So I bought it. I've never modded Fallout 4 before. But Fallout 4 is actually an okay game, and I do wanna replay it soon. I wanna replay Fallout 1 and 2 first though. Maybe New Vegas later.

I'm very excited to replay Fallout 1. It's one of my favourite yearly traditions to do a full playthrough of it. There's just something quite calming about playing through that game from start to finish. I love it a lot. It's easily one of my favourite video games. It's the Fallout game I've replayed the most, just by the virtue of being a short, well paced story.

Something funny that happened is that I've been talking to a Korean Omori fan artist. He found me through my Lily of the Valley fanfic. He's been asking me stuff about translation. He's been paying people to translate his comics, and I've offered to proofread them. I can't translate them myself, because that would be a lot of effort for a fandom I'm no longer interested in. But proofreading is more than enough for me.

Anyway, these translators he has are insane. One of them is okay, but I suspect they use a machine translator, with how stiff they sound like. Grammatical errors abound, too. Another translator he works with is a Korean-Australian student he is friends with, apparently. This one clearly knows English well enough, but his translations are way too liberal. Now, i'm a big proponent of localization and changing up the translation so it makes sense in the target language. But this guy just completely changes jokes and even inserts random shipping-related comments for no reason.

I do think liberal translation can be justified and be very good. The Ace Attorney series is a great example of it. But I also think the translation should be some modicum of respect for the source material. It doesn't have to be 1-for-1, because translation is inherently transformative; but you should try to align with the purpose of the text. This guy just writes his own comics. And when the artist who is hiring you is instructing you not to do that, that's an asshole move to do as a translator.

Anyway. I fixed up their translations for free. And so the artist decided to gift me a coupon for a free delivery of fried chicken. Hey, free food for like, 15 minutes of work, is pretty good! I will take that. But the artist is also seriously considering hiring me instead and paying me for translations, which honestly, I would probably accept, if his rates are good enough. I could use some extra spending money.
